Corneotherapy
"Many skin pathologies can be eliminated by normalizing the stratum corneum of the skin." Albert Kligman
The discovery of Corneology has revolutionized the approach to skin care and treatment. Thanks to these important discoveries, a new direction appeared in cosmetology - corneotherapy.
Corneotherapy is a set of methods and means, the action of which is aimed at restoring and maintaining the functions of the stratum corneum.
The term "corneotherapy" was first introduced by Professor Albert Kligman, the founder of cosmeceuticals. Corneotherapy is a step forward from cosmeceuticals, it is a progressive skin care concept that links dermatology and cosmetics.
A. M. Kligman proved in his research that appropriate hydration and lipids not only maintain the integrity of the stratum corneum, but also contribute to further regeneration of the deeper layers of the skin.
Corneotherapy is a set of skin care methods that are aimed at restoring the skin and protecting its barrier systems.
In 1964, Kligman in his work “Biology of the stratum corneum” formulated a new view of the epidermis, arguing that the stratum corneum is not just an accumulation of dead and keratinized cells, but a dynamic and very active tissue with certain functions and a slender structure. The subject of study of corneotherapy is the stratum corneum (stratum corneum) - the features of its structure, composition, maintaining its integrity and the proper level of regeneration.
The stratum corneum performs a barrier function due to its unique structure. It consists of keratinized scales, which are a mechanical barrier (like bricks in a wall) and multi-layered lipid layers, which play the same role as the cement between the bricks.
The lipid layer of the skin is extremely important. When it is destroyed, the permeability of the skin increases dramatically, and the skin not only becomes vulnerable to microbes and toxins, but also rapidly dehydrates, becomes dry, flaky, irritated. Violation of the functions of the lipid barrier underlies such skin diseases as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, eczema, acne, etc.
Prevention of premature aging involves restoration (in case of visible damage), strengthening (in case of weakening) and maintenance (protection from aggressive external factors) of the barrier structures of the stratum corneum. Actually, this is the idea of the corneotherapeutic approach, which is increasingly being introduced into cosmetology practice.
To implement this approach in practice, cosmetic products must meet the basic principles of corneotherapy.
Contain only physiological (present in the skin and related to it) components, including: components of natural moisturizing factor (NMF); lipid mixtures based on vegetable oils, balanced in terms of fatty acid ratio; contributing to the restoration of the stratum corneum ceramides, phytosterols, phospholipids.
Do not contain non-physiological and aggressive components that violate the integrity of the stratum corneum: artificial fragrances, dyes, preservatives, emulsifiers; mineral oils, silicones, propylene glycol, PEG and other refined products; sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate (SLS, SLES) and other surfactants.
Best of all, sea water and algae cope with this task, it is very similar to our body.
The whole set of amino acids, including essential ones
Essential fatty acids (the amount exceeds that of terrestrial plants)
Carbohydrates
Trace elements, minerals, vitamins
Antioxidant and Enzyme Systems
Algo hormones similar to human hormones have been isolated from algae.
